Bedford Fall Foliage Festival 4-H Paws N Pals Club

October 3rd and 4th, 2009, the 4-H Paws N Pals club participated in the Bedford Fall Foliage Festival in Bedford, PA. This annual event draws tens of thousands of people to Bedford each year for one of the largest craft shows in the area. The Paws N Pals club participated this year and sold their dog bandanas. Club members took shifts over the weekend and practiced their “sales pitch” on visitors to the event. The club also promoted 4-H in the area and gave out information on joining the club. When members shifts were over, everyone got to partake in the festivities. Great fun was had by all and it turned out to be a profitable weekend with the club netting $463.00 for their long hours and hard work. Great job once again 4-H Paws N Pals members!

The club will also be taking cash donations on its web site at http://www.4-HPawsNPals.com/DogFoodDrive.html . Proceeds from cash donations will be used to purchase dog and cat food. The three local beneficiaries of the donations will be the Allegany County Animal Shelter, Ark of Hope no-kill shelter, and Safe Haven no-kill shelter. The Dog and Cat Food Drive will run until October 31, 2009. Participating businesses and organizations are listed on the club’s web site. If your business or organization would like to get involved, you can email the club from their web site. 4-H Paws N Pals Club spent June 13th and 14th participating in Cumberland’s annual Heritage Days festival. Thousands of people turned out to visit the artisans, food vendors, and partake in a bit of street fair fun. Our 4-H’ers were in attendance with their fundraising booth and dog product lineup that included hand made rye, beef and chicken dog biscuits. The 4-H’ers were happy to tell interested customers that our biscuits contained no corn, no wheat, and were made with human grade ingredients. Hundreds of bags were sold. The 4-H club also brought their hand made dog bandanas in three styles.

Many creative members of the 4-H Paws N Pals Club demonstrated that the dog bandanas could also be worn as hats and used as hair scrunchies. Several members had a great deal of fun modeling a variety of dog bandanas throughout the weekend. Club members also used the Heritage Days festival to actively solicit new members and tell people about our upcoming 4-H Dog Retreat. Promotional materials were handed out to kids who were interested in our club. Several new members signed up after seeing our booth at Heritage Days. Along with their fund raising activities, the 4-H Paws N Pals Club spent the weekend educating festival goers on the hazards and warning signs of heatstroke in dogs. Last year the Heritage Days festival had several dogs that got overheated to the point of getting ill. 4-H’ers were informing all attendees with dogs to make sure their pets got plenty of water, spent time in the shade, cautioned about pet’s pads on their feet getting burned on the blacktop, and the need to monitor their dog’s behavior for signs of exhaustion. Pals Club set up a doggie watering station with free water for all the dogs in attendance. 4-H’ers were busy handing out bowls of water for the entire weekend. Dogs and dog owners were very appreciate, as were the organizers of Heritage Days. The two day festival had a great turn out by our club. Entire 4-H families came to participate in the outdoor fun. The event grossed the club $530.00. Everyone agreed that although it was a lot of work, it was certainly fun. The club is looking ahead to participate in the Fall Foliage Festival in Bedford, PA.

Members of the 4-H Paws N Pals club took one more day to bake gourmet dog biscuits for the upcoming Heritage Days festival. The club is baking gourmet dog biscuits in three flavors, rye, beef, and chicken, for the event. The 4-H’ers dog biscuits contain no wheat, no corn, and are made with human grade ingredients. Leader Sue Merritt likes them with a bit of cream cheese. Several members have tried the biscuits which taste like a rye cracker and have given their overwhelming approval for them to be given to their dogs. Look for the 4-H Paws N Pals club on Washington Street during this weekend’s Heritage Days Festival in Cumberland, MD.
