November Meeting Minutes

The November meeting of the 4-H Paws N Pals Club was held on November 12, 2009 at the Washington Street Library at 6:00 P.M. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Alicia, the 4-H Pledge was led by Caldwell. The roll was taken by Caldwell. 12 members, 2 leaders, and 5 parents, a total of 19 people attended the meeting. The minutes were not read. In correspondence, there was a ‘Thank-You’ note from Safe Haven animal shelter, thanking us for our dog food donations. There were no Officer Reports. The fundraising committee report was giving by Kim. The dog and cat food drive committee report was given by Caldwell. The Christmas party committee report was given by Kim. In unfinished business, there was a report given by Alicia on the Record Book Workshop that was held before the meeting. There was also a report given on the AKC Dog Show by Bryan. Under new business motions there was a motion made by Atticus to attend and walk in the Country Club Mall Santa Parade. It was seconded by Bryan. The motion passed. There was a motion made by Kaufman to attend and walk in the Frostburg Christmas Parade. It was seconded by Atticus. The motion passed. There was a motion made by Matt that any dogs attending the Frostburg Christmas Parade must have Obedience training. It was seconded by Brian. The motion passed. There was a motion made by Kaufman to bring candy to the Frostburg Christmas Parade to hand out to the spectators. It was seconded by Atticus. The motion passed. There was a motion made by Alicia to take $150.00 from the club’s funds for the Christmas Party. It was seconded by Caldwell. The motion passed. In other new business, The Country Club Mall Santa Parade is to be held on November 18 at 6:00 P.M. The Frostburg Christmas Parade is top be held on December 5 at 10:30 A.M. The December meeting was announced. And the Dog Obedience, Rally-O, and Junior Showmanship classes were announced. There were no Announcements. There was a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Kaufman. The motion passed. The program was a 5 minute Dog Talk by Jenna on Siberian Huskies and Beagles. Refreshments were provided by the Jackson Family.

Friday, October 30th, 2009, the 4-H Paws N Pals club held their first annual Halloween Costume Party. 4-H’ers and their family members attended in costume for a howling good time. Each family brought a covered dish and the club provided Chick Fil-A chicken.

Each 4-H family organized a Halloween game for everyone to participate in. There was bobbing for dangling apples, a spider scavenger hunt, a whipped cream eating contest, and a costume contest. Our costume contest winner was Alicia J. who came dressed as an Indian Princess. (Great costume!)

A big thanks to Ben F. and his family for hosting the event at their house. Another big round of applause and thanks goes to the Halloween Party Planning Committee which included Emily Jackson and Cynthia Speis, adult volunteers, and our 4-H’ers Atticus S., Darrah S., Griffith S., Alicia J., Kaufman B., Caldwell B., and Ben F. In addition to the wonderful work of the planning committee, expenses were paid for by the club’s fundraising activities.

The October meeting of the 4-H Paws N Pals Club was held on October 22, 2009 at the Washington Street Library at 6:20 PM. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Alicia, the 4-H Pledge was led by Caldwell, and the roll was taken by Caldwell. 10 members, 2 leaders, 4 guests, and 1 parent, a total of 17 people attended the meeting. The minutes were approved as read. There was no correspondence. The Treasurer’s report was given by Kim; the Historian’s report was given by Kaufman, and there was no Reporter’s report. The Leader’s report was given by Kim; she gave a report on the UPV Kennel Club meeting. Committee Reports: The Fundraising committee report was given by Kim, and there was a motion to start our own Rally-O Class and Junior Showmanship Class, which passed. It was announced that the Cumberland Rotary gave the club a $500 grant to further our obedience classes and help members work towards their Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog Certification. Obedience Classes will be announced soon. The Dog & Cat Food Drive committee report was given by Caldwell. He made a motion for the Club to donate $200.00 to the cause for the purchase of dog and cat food and was seconded by Alicia. The Halloween Party committee report was given by Kaufman. She made a motion to use $150.00 of the club’s fund as the party fund which was seconded by Caldwell. Unfinished Business: Kim gave a report on the Maryland dog QuizBowl Competition. The Intermediate Team came in 5^th and the Junior team came in 3^rd. Individual results included Sarah T. in 6^th place for Intermediates, Kaufman B. in 6^th place for Juniors, and Alicia J. in 7^th place for Juniors. Other participants from the 4-H Paws N Pals Club included Caldwell B. and Lydia D. New Business Motions: Kaufman made a motion to take $15-20.00 from the club’s fund to buy supplies for scrapbooking, which was seconded by Atticus. Atticus then made a motion to take $115.00 from the club’s fund to buy banners and ribbons for the club, which was seconded by Caldwell. Other New Business: The Allegany County Record-Book Workshop is to be held at 6:30 PM on November 9^th at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. The November and the December meeting have been rescheduled due to Thanksgiving and Christmas. The November meeting will be held on Thursday, November 12 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. There will be a Record Workbook Session from 5:00 to 6:00 on November 12^th before the monthly meeting at the Washington Street Library. The December meeting will be held Thursday, December 17^th from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. The Christmas Party committee meeting will start in November. There were no announcements. Kaufman then made the movement to adjourn the meeting and Atticus seconded it. The program was a movie presentation on dog safety.

4-H Paws N Pals selling their dog bandanas at the Upper Potomac Valley Kennel Club AKC Dog Show

The 4-H Paws N Pals Club was a proud participant in the Upper Potomac Valley Kennel Club’s AKC All Breed Dog Show held at the Allegany County Fair Grounds October 16th through 18th, 2009.

The dog show gave members the opportunity to see how a real AKC dog show was run. Members viewed before hand primping and grooming of the dogs. They got to talk to owners, handlers, and groomers about what the dog show world is all about. 4-H’ers had front row seats to watch all the action in the ring as dogs competed for agility titles, obedience titles, and best in show. Members routed on their favorite breed throughout the 3 day long event.

4-H Paws N Pals members volunteered to be the “Official Pooper Scoopers” of the dog show. Members took turns cleaning up “accidents” in and around the show rings.

The 4-H club was also invited to sell their hand made dog bandanas at the event. Event participants were very complimentary of the club’s wares and supported our club enthusiastically. The club netted $300 in bandana sales at the 3 day event.

The Upper Potomac Valley Kennel Club generously donated $300 to the 4-H Paws N Pals Club in thanks for being the event’s “Official Pooper Scoopers”. Another fun and profitable weekend of activities and learning events with the 4-H Paws N Pals Club.

4-H Paws N Pals Junior Dog Quiz Bowl Team: Maddie Y., Alicia J., Kaufman B.

The 4-H Paws N Pals Club recently voted to have club t-shirts made. The club included their dog log on the shirts with their club name and web site address. These t-shirts will be worn by club members at public outings and contests that the club will participate in. Each club member received a t-shirt courtesy of the club’s fundraising efforts and its sponsors. The club t-shirts debuted at the MD State Dog Quiz Bowl Contest on October 10, 2009.

4-H Paws N Pals Intermediate Dog Quiz Bowl Team members: Lydia D., Caldwell B., Sarah T.

Saturday, October 10, 2009, was the Maryland State Dog Quiz Bowl Contest in Westminster, MD. The 4-H Paws N Pals Club was proud to have two teams competing for the first time ever. This was the first time that any participants from Allegany County participated in the state event. Members of the Intermediate Team included Lydia D., Caldwell B., and Sarah T. Intermediate Team Captain was Sarah T. Members of the Junior Team included Alicia J., and Kaufman B., from the 4-H Paws N Pals Club. Our Junior Team was also joined by Maddie Y., from Frederick County. Junior Team Captain was Alicia J.

Members of the Dog Quiz Bowl Team had been practicing since June to ready themselves for the big competition. Through Dog Quiz Bowl, team members learned about more than 140 different AKC registered dog breeds, dog health, dog diseases, dog first aid, dog breeding, pet ownership and responsibility, and AKC dog sports including Junior Showmanship, Agility, Earthdog events, Tracking, and Rally-O. The Paws N Pals Dog Quiz Bowl Team used an online learning tool specifically designed for their team using dog related information to help them study for the event.

The Junior Team came in 3rd place in the state event. Individual results included Kaufman Butler in 6th place and Alicia Jackson in 7th place. The Intermediate Team came in 5th place. Individual results included Sarah Thomas in 6th place.

After the competition, team members were taken to Applebees Restaurant where they were treated to lunch courtesy of the 4-H Paws N Pals Club.

Bedford Fall Foliage Festival

October 3rd and 4th, 2009, the 4-H Paws N Pals club participated in the Bedford Fall Foliage Festival in Bedford, PA. This annual event draws tens of thousands of people to Bedford each year for one of the largest craft shows in the area. The Paws N Pals club participated this year and sold their dog bandanas. Club members took shifts over the weekend and practiced their “sales pitch” on visitors to the event. The club also promoted 4-H in the area and gave out information on joining the club. When members shifts were over, everyone got to partake in the festivities. Great fun was had by all and it turned out to be a profitable weekend with the club netting $463.00 for their long hours and hard work. Great job once again 4-H Paws N Pals members!

The September meeting of the 4-H Paws N Pals Club was held on Thursday, September 24, 2009, at the Washington Street Library at 6:15 PM. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sarah T., and the 4-H Pledge was led by Jenna P. The roll was taken by Atticus S., 8 members, 1 leader, 7 parents, and one guest speaker for a total of 18 attendees. There was no correspondence, Treasurer’s report, or leader’s report. Jenna P. gave a reporter’s report on the club picnic and the Dog and Cat Food Drive. There was a publicity report by Jenna P. Sarah T gave a Dog Quiz Bowl report and a motion to pay for food and travel expenses to the upcoming Dog Quiz Bowl Tournament was passed. Alicia J. gave a report on the Dog Splash in Frostburg. Announcements were made about the Dog Show sign up and the Bedford Fall Foliage Festival. There was a motion to adjourn the meeting by Alicia J. The program was a presentation by Diane Cares from the Ark of Hope shelter about animal rescue in Allegany County.

4-H Paws N Pals Dog & Cat Food Drive

4-H Paws N Pals Dog & Cat Food Drive

To coincide with Responsible Pet Ownership Month, the 4-H Paws N Pals Club will be collecting dog food, cat food and cat litter donations at various drop off points around Allegany County, MD. The club will also be taking cash donations on its web site at http://www.4-HPawsNPals.com/DogFoodDrive.html . Proceeds from cash donations will be used to purchase dog and cat food. The three local beneficiaries of the donations will be the Allegany County Animal Shelter, Ark of Hope no-kill shelter, and Safe Haven no-kill shelter. The Dog and Cat Food Drive will run until October 31, 2009. Participating businesses and organizations are listed on the club’s web site. If your business or organization would like to get involved, you can email the club from their web site. The idea for the drive came from club secretary, Caldwell B., who had heard local animal shelters were in need of food. Way to go kids! This is what 4-H is all about!

Saturday, September 5, 2009, the 4-H Paws N Pals Club held their first annual End of Summer Picnic at the public beach at Lakewood. All the families that attended each brought a covered dish and the club supplied chicken for a fabulous feast. We were lucky enough to have perfect weather for our picnic so members enjoyed swimming and playing at the beach. As the sun started to set, we built a campfire and enjoyed smores and ice cream. Club members enjoyed a treasure hunt. Great thanks to the 4-H Paws N Pals End of Summer Picnic planning committee headed by adult volunteers Emily Jackson and Cynthia Speis and members Atticus S., Darrah S., Griffith S., Alicia J., Kaufman B., Caldwell B., Karen H., Katie H., Jenna P., and Matt P. Wonderful job! We’re all looking forward to next year!
